Lacada Basenjis started in 1994 with our first purchase, Ms. Calypso
Jewel of the Nile. My mother, Carol, had decided a year before that she
wanted a small animal that was hypoallergenic. She had done her
research, talked to several breeders, went to dog shows, and decided to
obtain her first basenji from Susan Patterson, who resided in the same
area that I attended undergraduate school.
Belle was the "Queen." She was well behaved, smart, and gentle with
everyone. Belle went into the show ring on her way to her championship.
We acquired another basenji, Hadassa Windsong of the Nile, Haddie.
Belle and Haddie ran freely in the yard and became quick friends. In the
late summer of 1994, Belle and Haddie were playing, and Belle fell off
the porch. Belle tore an ACL and couldn't be shown until it healed.
CH Calypso Jewel of the Nile finished her championship in 1997 handled
by E. "Mac" McFarland. During the time Belle was showing, we obtained
several other basenjis! Our family has extended into many and we are
proud of our kids!
Lacada Basenjis actually resides now in two separate residences. My
parents, Carol and Larry, live on a three acre farm just east of DeKalb,
Missouri. For those who do not know where DeKalb is located, we are
between St. Joseph, MO and Kansas City International Airport, roughly
ten miles from Atchison, KS and Elwood, KS. I reside in the town of
DeKalb. Between the two homes we have 12 basenjis and the
occasional litter of babies!
